Step 2 Remove: Comb Out Lice and Eggs

Combing with a fine-tooth lice comb is an essential step to remove lice eggs.

  • Regular comb for parting and detangling hair
Find a distraction for your child (eg, books, TV, game)

Start Combing Process:

Comb Out Hair — Comb out damp hair with a regular wide-tooth comb to take out snarls and tangles. You can use a little of the RID® Comb-Out Spray to help if desired.
Apply RID® Comb-Out Spray — Generously apply RID® Lice & Egg Comb-Out Spray to one section of hair. Do not apply to entire head at once, since product dries quickly.(Comb-out Spray only sold with the Lice Treatment Complete Kit)
Start Combing Process
Use patented RID® Lice Comb — Place comb as close to scalp as possible and comb with a firm, even motion away from scalp, starting from the roots of the hair (newly laid eggs are found near the roots of the hair so it is important to get the teeth very close to scalp).
Begin Combing — Lift a small section of hair (about 1 to 2 inches wide). Begin combing in a "scooping" motion, gently pushing the teeth as close to the hair roots as possible, and drag lice comb firmly from the roots to the ends of the hair. Make sure the teeth are deeply embedded into the strands as you comb through.
Clean Lice Comb Frequently — Always comb away from the head. Wipe eggs and nits from the teeth of the comb with a tissue or paper towel.

Pin Back Combed Hair — Pin back the 1 to 2 inch strand you just finished combing with a bobby pin or hair clip.

Repeat Combing:

Lift up another 1 to 2 inch strand and repeat the combing procedure, reapplying RID Comb-Out Spray as needed.

Repeat Application on Dry Section of Hair — When one section has been combed and pinned, apply RID® Lice & Egg Comb-Out Spray to another section of hair. Continue to comb hair 1 to 2 inches at a time until entire head has been combed and pinned.
Repeat Combing
Keep Hair Damp — Keep the hair damp during combing and re-apply RID® Lice & Egg Comb-Out Spray as needed.
Remove Pins and Rinse — After you have combed and pinned the entire head, remove all bobby pins or hair clips and rinse hair thoroughly with warm water. If desired, you may also wash with regular shampoo.

Helpful Hints:

Combing is a very important but also tedious step in the process. A good lice comb and a hair detangling aid, such as RID Lice & Egg Comb-Out Spray can significantly reduce combing time as well as excessive pulling or tearing of the child's hair. While often underestimated, combing time can range between 1 and 8 hours, depending on length of hair.

Carefully inspect the hair for lice every day for at least 2 weeks. If eggs or live lice are spotted, you may wish to repeat the combing process, but shampooing with the RID® Lice Killing Shampoo should not be repeated before the 7th day. It is not necessary to comb between shampooings, as these lice are not mature enough to lay eggs and will be eliminated with the second shampooing.
